2008 Physician Lifetime Achievement Award
 SARASOTA MEMORIAL HEALTH CARE SYSTEM – Sarasota Memorial’s Medical Staff recently bestowed a Lifetime Achievement Award on a local physician for contributions he has made to the hospital and community.
Thomas A. O'Malley, MD, was awarded the hospital’s “2008 Lifetime Achievement Award,” at the annual Medical Staff Meeting Oct. 28. Dr. O' Malley was selected by a committee of physician leaders after being recognized by his peers for 37 years of service in the field of Gastroenterology.
Among other things, Dr. O’Malley provided leadership and medical direction necessary to ensure the highest quality of service and care as Sarasota Memorial incorporated advances in Gastroenterology practices and techniques over the decades.
Born in Southport, England, Dr. O'Malley attended Liverpool Medical School before coming to the United States in 1957. He continued studies at Lahey Clinic in Boston and completed his residency in Gastroenterology and served on the medical staff at the University of Rochester in New York. He joined the medical staff of Sarasota Memorial in 1972.
Dr. O'Malley remains a clinical professor of Gastroenterology at the University of South Florida, a fellow of the American Board of Gastroenterology and member of the American College of Physicians. Over the years, he served on multiple committees at Sarasota Memorial and on the Board of Governors for the Sarasota County Medical Society. He retired from Sarasota Memorial in July 2008 to spend more time with his family, including five children and 10 grandchildren.
