SMH Ranks In Nation's Top 100 Hospitals to Work For
Sarasota Memorial Health Care System has been named among the nation's Top 100 Hospitals to Work For in 2009 in Nursing Professionals magazine.
The national nursing magazine surveyed 25,000 randomly selected hospital nurses throughout the country, measuring job satisfaction and key indicators of a hospital's support of the nursing profession. Among other qualities, Top 100 Hospitals to Work For were praised for maintaining a culture that supports the nursing profession and provides its nursing staff with opportunities and leadership roles that promote better care for patients.
Sarasota Memorial's Top 100 Hospitals to Work For recognition is the third nursing honor the local hospital has received in the past several months.
In December, for the second time in a row, Sarasota Memorial was re-designated a Magnet hospital by the prestigious American Nurses Credentialing Center. The award is given once every four years for a hospital's ability to recruit and retain the best and brightest nurses and is widely regarded as one of the nation's best indicators of how well a hospital takes care of its patients. Nationally, just 5 percent of U.S. hospitals retained or earned the designation in 2008. Sarasota Memorial was the only one in the region to do so.
And in October 2008, ADVANCE for Nurses magazine listed Sarasota Memorial among Florida's “top hospitals” in its second statewide nurses' survey of hospital performance. Nurses judged 279 Florida hospitals for their quality of care, organizational culture, professional development, communication and nurse retention efforts. It was the second year in a row that Sarasota Memorial scored top honors in all five categories, earning it a spot on the nurses' Reader's Choice Honor Roll.

Sarasota Memorial's latest award was spotlighted in a special issue of Nursing Professionals magazine distributed to nurses and nursing schools nationwide in January. And on Feb. 4, hospitals leaders are hosting a special celebration to honor its staff for their commitment to excellence and superior patient care.
